A catalog nearly fifty years in the making, Bruce Springsteen's music remains popular and a frequent subject of study, yet little critical attention has been given to its inclusion in film and television. This book examines a selection of films and TV shows from the 1980s to the present -- including Mask, High Fidelity, The Sopranos and The Wrestler -- that feature Springsteen's music on the soundtrack.
As the author tells Backstreets, her new book "studies Springsteen's oeuvre, ranging from Greetings to Springsteen on Broadway, and his overall relationship with cinema." In these pages she "looks closely at how thirteen film and television shows use Bruce’s music to color narrative, shape visuals, and voice characters’ thoughts. Each relate to essential themes found across Springsteen’s decades-long body of work, such as the promise of the open road, working class oppression, and the Vietnam War."
Caroline Madden is a film critic based in New Jersey who has written for Backstreets, Reverse Shot, IndieWire, Screen Queens, and more.
