By Ron Kovic. With a new foreword by Bruce Springsteen, this edition marks the 40th anniversary of the original publication of Kovic's American antiwar classic. This New York Times best seller, with more than one million copies sold, details the author's life story (portrayed by Tom Cruise in the Oliver Stone film) from a patriotic soldier in Vietnam, to his severe battlefield injury, to his role as the country's most outspoken anti-Vietnam War advocate, spreading his message from his wheelchair.
Born on the Fourth of July and a subsequent meeting with Kovic impacted Springsteen's worklife in a major way, and you can trace a line directly from here to his 1981 Night for the Vietnam Veteran benefit to a song like "Born in the U.S.A." In his forward, Springsteen calls the book "one of the most powerful I'd ever readÉ Ron's book, his passion, and his friendship have stayed with me to this day."
Essential reading - if you don't already have a copy, this 40th anniversary edition is a beautiful one to have on your shelf.
Softcover, from Akashic Books.
