This ain't no dream: A live recording from the Devils & Dust tour, released on vinyl only by a small UK label, and it's official!
Springsteen's live cover of Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream" from 2005 -- a seven-minute performance, audio taken from the yet-to-be-completed D&D tour DVD -- is being made available exclusively on a ten-inch record on the Blast First Petite label. Released in October 2008, it's a (very) limited edition of 4,000.
This record kicks off a singles series celebrating Suicide vocalist Alan Vega's 70th birthday; according to the label, each single "will feature an established recording artist paying tribute to Alan by covering one of his songs, plus a previously unreleased Suicide/Vega rarity from the archives, and, showing that Vega's work continues to inspire, a cover version by a young and upcoming band."
This first one of the series boasts a cover (pictured above right) featuring the 1994 Edward Mapplethorpe photograph, "Stars," and contains the following tracks.
A side: Bruce Springsteen - "Dream Baby Dream" (6:55)
Recorded live for the "Dust & Devils" solo tour (2005)
B1: Suicide - "Dream Baby Dream"
Previously unreleased. Recorded for the The Cars' NBC TV "Midnight Special" (9/28/79)
B2: Beat The Devil - Mr Ray (5:30)
A now defunct contemporary New York band covers Suicide.
